THE DRIFTER

Written by Sara So Far

I came from distant but not afar

Spread my bed among this population

Here I fell victim to endless strolling

Observed by none but one with all

I’ve settled among the Endless Others

Other I have become, myself

Fragrances of day

Lights of lengthening nights

The trains here sing and I

try to catch their tones just to feel alive

I wrap the city all around me

to hide from winter’s chill

Warm myself at life that runs

through illuminated streets

Warmer and warmer I melt, then evaporate

join the clouds in their skyparade

Slowly drift away

Drift away to sea

The waves here sing and I

dive into their tones just to be set free

Come back dear one and sing for us

the melodies of water and wind

Tell of how the trees applauded every time

the light danced to the rhythm of the seasons

Come back and have the cloak

that you wore with so much pride

Come back, lay down your modesty

be one of us, don’t hide

Come empty all your pockets, empty them right here

Our tables are bare and waiting

Display here your stories of hope and love and fear

ignite them with a song

ignite them with a song

We’ll wrap your art around us

to hide from winter’s chill

Warm ourselves at words of longing

that dance along from ear to ear

Warmer and warmer, we melt, then evaporate

Join the clouds in their skyparade

Rising up as one

Drift away to sea

The waves here sing, telling

of whatever’s been and of what will be
